YouTube app is finally getting a Dark Mode on Android Devices

| By Shandilya

YouTube has finally given Android users a “dark mode” option, four months after the same feature rolled out on iOS devices. Google apps don’t typically have dark themes. YouTube, however, is different. The desktop website received a dark mode option last year and users have been requesting it for mobile ever since. Well, this took a while and now it is in.

To recollect, YouTube officially announced a dark theme was coming to the Android and iOS app after it revamped in the web version. It first rolled out to the iOS client and is now finally beginning to appear for Android users.

The feature is rolling out from last Saturday with users seeing the “Dark theme” that is automatically applied along with a pop-up at the bottom of the screen noting the new feature. There is also an option to turn off according to your choice.

It can be manually adjusted by heading to  Settings > General > Dark theme.

This feature is not seen in all Android devices. Still, you need to wait a bit as Google hasn’t announced the rollout, and only seems to have made it available to a limited number of users at present. Hoping it will be soon making its way across the globe.

Same as in web and iOS, the theme is more of a dark grey rather than a straight black colour. The app’s background, settings, search pages, and anything else that was previously white follows the dark theme.  And some elements, such as the bright red Subscribe button and the YouTube logo will remain unchanged.

The new feature improves the visual and makes more comfortable for users to browse the site at night by inverting YouTube’s colour scheme. while the biggest impact of the dark theme is on the video page — where the video player is black before it fully loads where it makes less visual discordant.
