Xiaomi CEO Hints at Type-C Port in Upcoming Redmi Phone

Popular Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi is likely make some changes to the upcoming popular Redmi series phones. Earlier this week, the company confirmed that the Xiaomi and Redmi spilt to become independent brands. The main reason for the separation is that, Xiaomi and Redmi brands can now focus on high and low segment smartphones. However, according to CEO Lei Jun, this changes may lead to a slight improvement in the Redmi series phones.

CEO Lei Jun has now made a few comments on Weibo about the idea of implementing Type-C port on the upcoming Redmi series phone. The CEO asked his follower if they wanted to see the C-type port of the upcoming Redmi phone. In the end, the price of smartphones will rise, he added. However, he cannot confirm whether the new Redmi model with whopping 48-megapixel includes this type C USB port. Given the sudden interest in this specific topic, it is highly likely that the mobile phone will replace the existing MicroUSB Type-C port before its launch on January 10.

The Type-C port technology is faster, more efficient over existing MicroUSB technology. But, the low-cost smartphone lineup has almost always used the typical MicroUSB port mainly due to the cost factor and compatibility. To recall, LeTV’s Le Max, Le 1 Pro, and Le 1, were the first Android smartphones come with Type-C connectors in 2015. Now, almost all flagship Android smartphone makers adopting USB Type-C in their smartphones.

Yesterday, the specifications of the upcoming Mi 9 leaked and it is even confirmed the 48MP rear-facing camera. Another interesting rumor is that the Redmi brand could be managed by the former president of Gionee Lu Weibing. A few days ago, President of Xiaomi Lee Jun announced that Lu Weibing had joined the company, but did not disclose his role. The announcements and news about the seperating the Redmi brand led to these speculation. While we have no official information to confirm this.
