Micromax’s Sub-brand YU to Comeback with New Smartphone

| By DWR Editor

It has been nearly one year since Micromax sub-brand YU announced a new smartphone. Now Micromax is all set to make comeback in the Indian smartphone market by releasing a new phone. However, the company has not announced anything about new or upcoming smartphone officially. But the official twitter handle hinted a new phone from the company. Official YU twitter posted a tweet stating, “It’s time for a Faceoff! Are YU ready? #YUFaceOff.”

The company’s last phone was Yureka 2 with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 processor which is launched in September last year. The Yureka 2 was priced at Rs 11,999 in India and it became popular along with some other competitors like Lenovo K8 Note.

But when Xiaomi acquired whole mid-range smartphone market from their good specifications and affordable price, the Micromax and YU had vanished from the market. Last year it was rumored that Micromax is shutting down the sub-brand YU. However, there was no confirmation from the company about the same.

YU Televentures is a brand that was created on 18 December 2014 as a joint venture between Cyanogen Inc and Micromax Informatics Limited. Also, YU holds official Cyanogen OS rights in India. Where in December 2016 the CyanogenMod developer group discontinued the Cyanogen OS. Micromax co-founder Rahul Sharma owns a 99% controlling stake in YU while the remaining 1% is held by two other co-founders, Vikas Jain and Sumeet Arora.

On August last year, the Micromax’s co-founder Rahul Sharma stated that the company had taken a step back with a specific end goal to watch how the market played out.

To recall, the Yureka 2 was released with 5.5-inch full HD screen and 16MP rear plus 8MP front camera. The device was equipped with a 4GB RAM and 64GB ROM along with quick charge 3.0 support. The Yureka 2 has fingerprint with a 3930 mAh battery.
