LG has launched the LG V40 ThinQ, its new flagship smartphone with five cameras – two selfie lenses and a triple-camera system on the back.,the company’s big device of the year is arguably the company’s most ambitious one. So far the year, LG had unveiled its three flagship smartphones: the LG V30S ThinQ, the V35 ThinQ and the G7 ThinQ. And the fourth is the new LG V40 ThinQ which almost packs same components as its former ones but it also packs whopping five cameras (three rear and two front-facing), thanks to the ultra-wide lens which it honourably declares itself as world’s first smartphone to take on an ultra wide-angle shot or zoom in.
Of course, LG is not the first to go with a triple-lens main camera system; Huawei has already done it with the P20 Pro. Lg took a higher step, however. The P20 Pro’s three lenses are mostly used for pulling in more light and colour information. The V40 provides cameras of varying focal length.
As a camera
In the triple lens, the main camera features a 12MP sensor with 1.4µm pixels, significantly larger than the 1.0µm pixels of its former phones LG G7 and V35. The lens is paired with a brighter f/1.5 lens and Optical Image Stabilization where low f-stop is definitely producing brighter, less noisy images at night. This is the first LG camera to offer Dual Pixel autofocus.
And the other two cameras allow you to take an all-encompassing shot or zoom in closer. The latter is handled by the 12MP telephoto lens with 2X lossless zoom, while the other two are a standard shooter paired with a wide-angle lens with a 107-degree field of vision – as seen on previous LG handsets. In between this three camera lens, the V40’s cameras can pull back further or zoom in closer than most phones.
All three rear cameras feature digital image stabilization for video along with HDR recording. There is a 1080p at 240fps mode for cool slow-motion shots. And a 4K at 60fpsfor op video capture mode.
This new device brings the ability to shoot cinematography, which are animated GIFs or videos that give the illusion of being a still photo, except that part of the frame is in motion. There’s naturally an AI engine that will help you compose your shot. It recognizes people in the frame and will guide to a perfect “rule of thirds” composition.
As a Smartphone
The LG V40 ThinQ heart is the camera, Apart from that the smartphone sports 6.4” FullVision display, unlike G-series, the V-series regained its screen size. It has a QHD+ OLED panel with HDR10 support and a 19.5:9 aspect ratio. And yes it has a notch. The handset is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 SoC coupled with 6GB RAM and option for 64GB or 128GB UFS 2.1 storage. It also supports expandable storage up to 2TB via microSD card slot.
The LG V40 ThinQ kept its legacy with the full complement of IP68 rating and MIL-STD-810G certification. The V40 runs Android 8.1 Oreo (with LG’s custom launcher on top). The battery capacity is 3,300mAh, this might be a quite disappointed with a flagship phone. But the V40 supports fast wireless charging, which is first for LG. The wired option is QuickCharge 3.0.
