Know how tough is the new Gorilla Glass 6: Review

| By Shandilya

You might be very familiar with cracking your smartphone’s screen. It happens all the time. Better think not to happen. Thanks to Gorilla glass which almost found in every iPhone and Android flagship display for over a decade. Gorilla Glass typically sits between the display and the outside world, protecting your screen from damage. The Gorilla Glass 6 announced earlier this week which will be sooner used for future phones.

Let us see what the next generation of Gorilla Glass does. The company corning has unveiled Gorilla Glass 6 as an all-new glass protection for mobile devices which is a successor to Gorilla Glass 5. The Gorilla Glass 6 will also be able to withstand 15 drops from a height of 1 meter onto rough surfaces, a statistic that is up to two times better than Gorilla Glass 5.

The company has used a new glass composition to make the fresh Gorilla Glass version capable of withstanding multiple drops. Specifically, Corning increased what’s called the compressive stress of the glass, which is what helps it withstand impacts.

“Gorilla Glass 6 is an entirely new glass composition that can be chemically strengthened to give it significantly higher levels of compression than is possible with Gorilla Glass 5. This enables Gorilla Glass 6 to be more resistant to damage,” said Dr. Jaymin Amin, vice president of technology and product development, Corning Gorilla Glass and Corning Specialty Materials, in an official statement.

“There’s always two fundamental components for Gorilla Glass. One is the actual glass composition at the atomic level, which elements are in the glass itself. And what we do is combine it with an ion exchange process, basically a strengthening process,” says Forester.

The process of creating a new generation of Gorilla Glass, then, becomes a bit like reinventing the wheel, or maybe more accurately two gears—the composition and the strengthening process—that align to meet your objectives.

Gorilla Glass 6 can handle repeated drops better than its predecessor and deal with scratching and high-up drops just as well.

Alongside offering an enhanced durability, Gorilla Glass 6 is designed with optimized “optical clarity, touch sensitivity, scratch resistance, efficient wireless charging and enhanced durability” to match modern design trends where glass panels are featured not just at the front but also at the back. The company believes that modern smartphone designs use glass for more than 85 percent of the enclosure. This is where the newest Gorilla Glass panel helps.

The Gorilla Glass 6 manufacturers are now sharing with phone makers, and we should expect this to feature in new phones well before the end of the year.
