Huawei announced Kirin 980, the world’s first 7nm AI mobile chipset. Alongside the Kirin 980 chipset, Huawei additionally declared the AI Cube smart speaker which looks like the Google Home, and 8GB RAM, 256GB variant of the Honor P20 Pro with two color options.
The Honor Mate 20 was rumored several times indicating that the smartphone will feature a 6.3-inch screen with a smaller notch compared to other smartphones in the current market. The device is reported to have a large 4,200 mAh battery and triple camera setup on its back, like Honor P20 Pro.
The Huawei Mate 20-series will be officially launching on October 16 at an event in London. The device will be the first smartphone to be powered by the Kirin 980 SoC, taken after by the Honor Magic 2.
About the chipset, Huawei CEO Richard Yu stated:
Last year, we showed the world the potential of On-Device AI with the Kirin 970, and this year, we’ve designed an all-around powerhouse that not only features outstanding AI capabilities, but also brings cutting-edge raw performance to consumers. Equipped with all-new CPU, GPU and Dual NPU, the Kirin 980 is the ultimate engine to power next-generation productivity and entertainment applications.
Coming to the features of the Kirin 980 SoC, this chipset will offer 20 percent performance improvements, upgraded GPU and NPU, and 40 percent improvement in efficiency compared to the 10nm chipset. The CPU with Cotex-A76 cores is 77 percent more powerful and 58 percent efficient compared to the previous generation.
At the October event, Huawei is relied upon to unveil both Honor Mate 20 and Mate 20 Pro phones. Both the phones are anticipated to highlight Huawei P20 Pro-like triple camera setup. Further, the Mate 20 and Mate 20 Pro is expected to run on EMUI 9 skin-based Android 9. However, the specifications of both phones are not officially announced yet, Huawei could come with two variants 6GB RAM and 128GB storage option, 8GB RAM with 256GB storage options.
