Honor 8X vs Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro: Battle for the Mid-Range Bezel-Less Supremacy

Display

The Honor 8X comes with a 6.5-inch Full HD+ IPS notched display with a new 19.5:9 ratio and a 91% screen-to-body-ratio. The screen has a 2.5D curved glass protection. Honor is continuing the trend of the notch and the device acquires a normal notch instead of waterdrop notch, that we’ve seen in Oppo F9, RealMe 2 Pro and OnePlus 6T.

Redmi Note 5 Pro also comes with a layer of 2.5D Corning Gorilla Glass on the top with rounded display corners. The device sports a 5.99-inch screen with an FHD+ resolution of 2160×1080 pixels and an aspect ratio of 18:9.

Performance

The device holds some assuring hardware under the hood. The Honor 8X is powered by the company’s own 12nm Kirin 710 Soc processor coupled with up to GB RAM and up to 128 GB of internal storage. This Kirin 710 SoC with 64-bit architecture, comprises of 4x ARM Cortex-A73 @ 2.2GHz and 4x ARM Cortex-A53 @ 1.7GHz CPU and an ARM Mali G51 MP 4 GPU. Honor 8X supports GPU Turbo feature that offers optimized gaming experience.

Coming to the Redmi Note 5 Pro, it is powered by the 1.8GHz octa-core Snapdragon 635 processor. The device does a very good job of handling multiple apps and games at the same time.

Camera

On the rear of the Honor 8X has a dual-camera setup, a 20MP primary camera sensor along with the 2MP depth camera sensor with an aperture of f/1.8. On the front, there’s a 16MP camera for taking selfies. The dual-lens setup of Honor 8X is capable enough to take good shots, but which seemed to oversaturated with bright colors. Selfies on the Honor 8X looked to be decent enough. The Honor 8X is yet another Huawei’s device to boast AI-enhanced image recognition, which can apparently distinguish between 500 different shooting scenarios and automatically apply one of 22 categorized scene settings. The camera of the device also features a ‘Night Mode’ which can take some impressive looking night time pictures.

Redmi Note 5 Pro features a combination of 16-megapixel and 5-megapixel cameras at the back. The primary 12MP camera has a 1.25µm sensor and a f/2.2, while the secondary camera has 1.12µm sensor and f/2.0. According to the Xiaomi, the secondary camera comes in handy for depth sensing in the portrait mode as well as capturing ‘additional information’ in low-light shots. Up front, there is a 20-megapixel selfie camera, which is equipped with Beautify 4.0 AI algorithm and a dedicated selfie-light to take beautiful selfies in any condition.

Battery

In terms of battery, the Honor 8X packs a 3,750 mAh battery and sadly, it does not come with any quick charge capabilities. Considering there’s now the fast charging is becoming more common, its addition felt obvious. Honor could’ve added fast charging as the devices in the same price such as RealMe 2 Pro and Redmi Note 5 Pro offers it.

The Redmi Note 5 Pro is backed by a massive 4,000 mAh battery with QuickCharge 2.0 support and device should easily last more than a day with moderate to heavy usage.
