Design and Display

Honor 8x Back

The Honor 8X comes with a 6.5-inch Full HD+ IPS notched display with a new 19.5:9 ratio and a 91% screen-to-body-ratio. The screen has a 2.5D curved glass protection. Honor is continuing the trend of the notch and the device acquires a normal notch instead of waterdrop notch, that we’ve seen in Oppo F9, RealMe 2 Pro and OnePlus 6T. But the normal notch of the Honor 8X isn’t looking bad. The screen size of the device is very big compared to other recently launched mid-range phones. The display is very crisp and gorgeous to look at and use.

At the back, there’s dual-rear camera module along with the LED flash and Honor branding. The fingerprint scanner that sits at the center of the phone. The company has also included the 3.5mm headphone jack which is at the bottom of the device along with MicroUSB charging port, microphone, and speaker grille.

Performance

The device holds some assuring hardware under the hood. The Honor 8X is powered by the company’s own 12nm Kirin 710 Soc processor coupled with up to GB RAM and up to 128 GB of internal storage. This Kirin 710 SoC with 64-bit architecture, comprises of 4x ARM Cortex-A73 @ 2.2GHz and 4x ARM Cortex-A53 @ 1.7GHz CPU and an ARM Mali G51 MP 4 GPU. On the performance side, we can expect the same level of performance you would otherwise get on a high-end smartphone.

Honor 8X is running EMUI 8.2 based on Android 8.1 Oreo. Company’s custom skin, EMUI isn’t the prettiest skin on top of Android, but it is fast, smooth and offers some sort of new features.

Camera

On the rear of the Honor 8X has a dual-camera setup, a 20MP primary camera sensor along with the 2MP depth camera sensor with an aperture of f/1.8. On the front, there’s a 16MP camera for taking selfies. The dual-lens setup of Honor 8X is capable enough to take good shots, but which seemed to oversaturate with bright colors. Selfies on the Honor 8X looked to be decent enough.

Honor 8x Camera

The Honor 8X is yet another Huawei’s device to boast AI-enhanced image recognition, which can apparently distinguish between 500 different shooting scenarios and automatically apply one of 22 categorized scene settings. The camera of the device also features a ‘Night Mode’ which can take some impressive looking night time pictures.

Battery

In terms of battery, the Honor 8X packs a 3,750 mAh battery and sadly, it does not come with any quick charge capabilities. Considering there’s now the fast charging is becoming more common, its addition felt obvious. Honor could’ve added fast charging as the devices in the same price such as Mi A2, Redmi Note 5 Pro offers it.

Verdict

The new Honor 8X has quite an impressive hardware package and the shiny glossy back and decent cameras. For now, the Honor 8X seems like a very promising device at this price segment. The device looks to fill a gap for those looking for an affordable alternative to the top-end devices on the market. If you are looking for a device with a large screen, premium feel and a lot of other top-end features at a lower price than the Honor 8X will be the perfect smartphone for you.
