Google Announces eSIM support for Pixel 3 smartphone in India. This flagship smartphone from Google will be getting eSIM support from carrier Reliance Jio and Airtel in the coming months.
eSIM or an Electronic Sim is a small rewritable chip embedded in a device that allows users to switch networks without having to obtain the new sim card. Previously, Reliance Jio and Airtel had provided the eSim support to Apple’s 2018 flagship smartphone, iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and iPhone XR in India.
However, Google did not provide an exact timeline of the rollout, but said eSIM support is arriving “in the coming months”.
“Sprint in the US, EE in the UK, Airtel and Reliance Jio in India, and Truphone and Gigsky in various countries will also roll out eSIM support for Pixel 3 in the coming months,” Kerrie Lenhart Hogan, Director, Partnerships at Google, said in blog post.
“If you’re in Germany, look out for the ability to purchase Pixel 3 with eSIM functionality from Deutsche Telekom and Vodafone soon.”
“To enable a consistent and simple experience across the ecosystem, we’re also creating a program that allows Android device makers to build eSIM-capable smartphones,” said Google.
Tech giant, Google claims that they are the first major smartphone vendor to support built-in eSIMs with its Project Fi – now called Google Fi – network from their Pixel 2 smartphone.
To recall, company had launched the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL smartphones in October. Google Pixel 3 base model with 64GB storage is priced at Rs 71,000 in India while the 128GB storage variant is priced at Rs 80,000.
